No, I'm not going nude.  That would be...disturbing.

My hair, though, is getting a makeover.  I have naturally curly hair, and for the last 5 or 6 years I've been straightening it out.

Well, I realize how much damage this has probably done to my hair.  And right now I am trying to grow it long, so I'm trying to keep it as healthy as possible.

I have decided not to straighten it for awhile.  I'm keeping the curls in.  So far it's gone well, and I actually kind of like it.  Plus it's much easier to deal with in the mornings than fighting with a straightener.  I am pretty happy with it right now.

Here's a few things I've learned while researching how to handle my hair, and avoid damage:
  • Shampoo as little as possible.  I usually do it about twice a week, or every 3 nights.
  • Get a spray bottle.  Fixing curly hair is easiest when it's a little damp.  I don't go crazy with it, just a few squirts, and it helps with the styling.
  • Use a good brand of mousse.  I use Frizz-Ease ($6 at Walmart) and it's amazing.
  • I also add in a little lotus shield ($12 from Avon) to help with the frizz, about half a dime size does the trick.
  • Run your fingers through your hair as soon as you put moose on it, or use a comb underneath the curls.  It helps loosen them up a bit and adds some volume.
  • It's okay to use a little heat if one of your curls is out of whack.  For example, my bangs were just doing this weird crimp thing, so I put my straightener on a low degree and just did a quick curly in it.
  • After showering, just blow dry for about a minute to get your hair damp, and use the lowest heat setting you can.  Then add in a little mousse and let it air dry.
